Sourced primarily from Australian and Indonesian waters, South Sea pearls are prized for their exceptional size (typically 9–20mm), warm golden or silver-white tones, and thick nacre that gives them a deep, satiny lustre unlike any other pearl type. Our South Sea pearl earrings, necklaces, and pendants represent the pinnacle of pearl jewellery.

Your Complete Guide to Buying Pearl Jewellery

Shopping for pearls shouldn't feel like a gemology exam. Here's what actually matters when you're choosing a piece.

The Four Main Types of Pearls - Which One Is Right for You?

Not all pearls are the same, and the type you choose shapes everything — the look, the price, and how the piece wears over time.

Freshwater Pearls Grown in lakes and rivers, primarily in China, freshwater pearls are the most accessible entry point into real pearl jewellery. They range from crisp white to soft blush and lavender, come in round, oval, and baroque shapes, and offer a soft, warm glow. Because a single mussel can produce multiple pearls, they're more affordable — which makes them ideal for everyday wear, stacking, and gifting. If you want real pearls without a significant outlay, freshwater is where to start.

Akoya Pearls These are the pearls that defined the word. Grown in saltwater off the coasts of Japan and China, Akoya pearls are celebrated for their perfectly round shape and the sharpest, most mirror-like luster of any pearl type. They're typically white or cream with a subtle rose or silver overtone. Classic, refined, and unmistakably elegant — Akoya pearls are the standard choice for bridal jewellery, heritage strands, and any occasion where you want understated luxury.

South Sea Pearls The most coveted pearls in the world, and Australia happens to produce some of the finest. Grown in the warm tropical waters of the South Pacific in the giant Pinctada maxima oyster, South Sea pearls are the largest cultured pearls available — typically 9mm to 16mm or more. They come in luminous white and deep golden tones with a satiny, soft luster unlike any other type. When you hold a South Sea pearl, you understand immediately why people consider them the benchmark of luxury.

Tahitian Pearls If you want pearls that do the talking, Tahitian pearls are your answer. Grown in French Polynesia in the black-lipped oyster, they are the only pearls that grow naturally dark — ranging from deep charcoal and graphite to rich peacock green, midnight blue, and eggplant. Bold, dramatic, and completely distinct, they're ideal for statement earrings, pendants, and anyone who finds the classic white pearl a little understated.

How Pearls Are Graded - What to Look For

When you're shopping for pearl jewellery, five qualities determine what you're actually getting:

Luster — The most important factor. Look for sharp, bright reflections on the surface. The clearer the reflection, the higher the quality. Soft, chalky luster indicates lower nacre quality.

Surface — No pearl is perfectly blemish-free, but the fewer and smaller the surface imperfections, the better. Minor marks are normal; deep pits or cracks affect both beauty and durability.

Shape — Round pearls are the rarest and traditionally the most valued. But baroque and drop shapes have a natural, organic beauty that suits contemporary jewellery particularly well.

Color — Both the body color and the overtone matter. Overtones — the secondary shimmer sitting on the surface — are what give a pearl its depth and individuality.

Nacre thickness — Particularly important for Akoya and South Sea pearls. Thicker nacre means deeper luster and a longer-lasting piece. For freshwater pearls, the entire pearl is composed of nacre, making this less of a concern.

Natural vs Cultured Pearls - Is There a Difference?

Both are real pearls. Both are formed by mollusks layering nacre around a nucleus. The difference is simply that cultured pearls involve a human-assisted process where a technician places a nucleus inside the oyster to begin formation. Nearly all pearl jewellery sold today including fine jewellery from heritage brands uses cultured pearls. Natural pearls (formed entirely without human intervention) are extraordinarily rare and almost exclusively found at auction.

At Vayo, every pearl in our collection is a genuine cultured pearl. We do not carry imitation pearls.

Baroque Pearls - The Case for Imperfect Beauty

The pearl world used to treat anything non-round as a second. That thinking is outdated. Baroque pearls - pearls with organic, irregular shapes - have become one of the most sought-after looks in contemporary jewellery. No two baroque pearls are identical. Worn in ear cuffs, asymmetric drops, and sculptural pendants, they carry a raw, natural energy that perfectly round pearls simply cannot replicate. If you're drawn to jewellery that feels distinctive rather than uniform, baroque is worth exploring.

Yes. Our real pearl earrings use genuine cultured pearls in freshwater, South Sea and Tahitian varieties. You’ll find studs and dangling styles, set in sterling silver or 14ct gold depending on the piece.
South Sea pearls are the largest of the three and come in white and golden tones with a soft, satiny glow. Tahitian pearls are dark, running from grey and charcoal to green peacock shades. Freshwater pearls grow in lakes and rivers, mostly in China, and are the most affordable. Each has its own collection: South Sea pearls, Tahitian pearls and freshwater pearls.
Yes. Our Tahitian black pearl range includes earrings, pendants, necklaces and sets, in shades from black and grey through to peacock. Some pieces are set in sterling silver and some in 14ct gold. Stock changes, so tick the In stock filter to see what’s available now.
Yes. Our South Sea pearl pendants come in white and gold pearls, set in sterling silver or 14ct gold. South Sea pearl necklaces are available as part of matching sets. Check the size range on each listing, as pearl size changes both the look and the price.
Our pearl jewellery sets pair a necklace or pendant with matching earrings, and some also include a ring. Freshwater sets are in 925 sterling silver, while South Sea and Tahitian sets come in 14ct gold. Each listing shows exactly what’s in the set, so check the product page before ordering.
Pearl earrings and pendants are the easy picks, because they suit most people and don’t need sizing. Freshwater pieces keep the budget down, and South Sea or Tahitian pearls suit bigger moments like anniversaries and milestone birthdays. Every pearl piece arrives gift-ready with a care guide, and shipping is free worldwide if the recipient lives overseas.
Baroque pearls have irregular, uneven shapes instead of a round shape. They are not lower quality by default. Quality still comes down to lustre, surface and nacre, so a baroque pearl with strong lustre can beat a round one with a dull surface. No two match, which suits anyone who wants something distinctive. If you’re shopping for baroque pearls in Australia, use the Shape filter to see current styles.
Start with the leather pearl bracelet, which pairs a black leather cord with a freshwater pearl. Our Men’s Jewellery collection has more men’s pearl jewellery to browse.
They are our labels for overall piece quality and do not reflect an official appraisal. There is no single industry-wide AAA standard for pearls, so compare pieces on lustre, surface, shape, size and nacre as well as the label.
